- 1. What is Palatinose™?
Palatinose™ is a disaccharide (sugar composed from glucose and fructose), which is derived from beet sugar and is known also as natural component of honey and sugar cane. Like normal sugar (sucrose) Palatinose™ is composed from glucose and fructose, but linked together in a more stable way compared to saccharose. Being this linkage more stable, the process of splitting in monosaccharides (single sugar molecules, necessary for their absorption) occurs more slowly and the energy is released more slowly but for a prolonged period of time. Palatinose™ is absorbed 4-5 times more slowly than sucrose.
- 2. Which are the benefits relate to Palatinose™ intake?
Palatinose™ has the same caloric value (4 kcal/g) as sucrose with however a lower glycemic index, which means that when glucose goes only slowly in blood, the blood sugar levels remains stable (therefore with absence of insulin peaks) and the body can receive energy from the carbohydrate over a long term period. For sports people the use of PalatinoseTM is of main importance. In typical endurance sports activities such as triathlon, cycling, football, long-distance running, half-marathon and marathon, etc implying duration of 1,5-2 hours or more, this innovative carbohydrate brings particular benefits. PalatinoseTM provides the body homogeneously with long-lasting energy, without causing blook sugar peaks. The race is therefore possible with an optimal blood sugar level.
- 3. What is a ‘sport bonk’?
Sports bonk is a condition also called hunger crisis which may occur in sports people perfoming long-lasting endurance sports activities. It is a condition caused by the depletion of glycogen (=stored sugar) stores in the liver and muscles, which manifests itself by precipitous fatigue and loss of energy. Milder instances can be remedied by brief rest and the ingestion of food or drinks containing carbohydrates. Such fatigue if not remedied can become seriously debilitating reaching exhaustion, general weakness, and manifestations of hypoglycemia, such as dizziness and even hallucinations. This dangerous condition will not be relieved by brief periods of rest.
- 4. How can a ‘sport bonk’ be avoided?
By using the carbohydrates storage the sports athlete goes into a low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia) and is therefore not performing properly any longer. Already by intake of fast available carbohydrates (e.g. fructose and sucrose) before and during races, sports people may go in a hypoglycaemic state. The fast available carbohydrates cause an increase of blood sugar peaks, causing also a high insulin production and delivery in the body and delivery and a hypoglycaemic state. The bonk (hunger crisis) in this case can not be avoided. The risk of a hypoglycemia can however be prevented with the intake of PalatinoseTM before and during sports activities.
- 5. What is hypoglycemia?
It is a condition of low blood sugar levels.
- 6. What is the glycaemic index?
The glycaemic index (GI) is a measure of the effects of carbohydrates on blood sugar levels. Carbohydrates that break down quickly during digestion and release glucose rapidly into the bloodstream have a high GI; carbohydrates that break down more slowly, releasing glucose more gradually into the bloodstream, have a low GI.
