Folic acid
Folic acid is an essential coenzyme in the breakdown (metabolism) of proteins and in the synthesis of new proteins. It is important for the production of red blood cells, the synthesis of DNA (the molecule carrying all genetic information), as well as tissue growth and cell function. Furthermore, it increases the appetite and stimulates the formation of digestive acids.

This vitamin is mainly found in beans and legumes, citrus fruits and juices, wheat bran and other whole grains, dark green leafy vegetables, poultry, pork, shellfish, and liver. A lack of folic acid may lead to poor growth, greying hair, inflammation of the tongue (glossitis), mouth ulcers, peptic ulcer, and diarrhea.
